Pet Diagnostics and Blood Work

If you've ever had an x-ray, blood test, urinalysis, or some other diagnostic procedure uncover a condition that would have impacted your quality of life or even your life span, you know how important it is for your pet to have the same diagnostics and blood work performed by a veterinarian. At Best Friends Veterinary Hospital in Crossville, we provide these services for our pet patients in order to ensure their continued health.

The What and Why of Pet Diagnostics and Bloodwork

Sometimes a person brings a cat or dog to one of our veterinarians at Best Friends Veterinary Hospital in Crossville, and it's obvious what's ailing the animal. Other times we need diagnostics to help us determine what is going on within the animal's body. Once we have the results of these diagnostic tests, we can prescribe treatment. In still other cases, these tests are part of a wellness examination and used to make sure a cat or dog does not have a condition or parasite common to its species. Some tests are only done once and are performed when the animal is very young or recently adopted. Others are done on an annual basis.

Bloodwork for Pet Wellness

  • Heartworm is a parasite that can seriously affect a dog's or cat’s heart, and in some instances cats. A heartworm blood test is used to detect microfiliae in an animal's blood. If the results are negative, the animal will be prescribed heartworm preventive medication as a prophylactic measure. If positive, treatment will be started immediately to combat this fatal condition.  We recommend periodic testing even after a pet is on medication.
  • Testing for Feline Leukemia (FeLV) and feline Immunodeficiency (FIV) viruses, both untreatable blood diseases transmitted through the saliva, are usually detected with one blood test. Since both are incurable, untreatable, and highly contagious, we strongly encourage owners of cats who are found to carry the virus to keep them indoors.
